Mount Pleasant Bonefish Lodge

Trip Summary:

Mount Pleasant Bonefish Lodge is located on Andros Island, Bahamas. Good fishing is available year-round, with peak season October through July. This is one of the few “do-it-yourself” operations anywhere in the Bahamas that offers the same amenities as the full-service lodges. Mount Pleasant is set on one of Andros Island's most beautiful stretch of beaches, White Bight. With direct access to beautiful white sandy beaches and over ten miles of easily-waded flats, this is the perfect destination for anglers interested in wade fishing on their own.

Fishing & General Information:

LENGTH OF STAY
Trips of any length are available, and the convenience of the Bahamas makes Andros the perfect getaway for a week-long fishing trip or a quick weekend escape.

THE FISHING
Andros Island, located approximately 150 miles east of the Florida Keys, is a premier bonefish destination. This Bahamian Island, which is over 100 miles long and in places up to 40 miles wide, consists of a vast area of flats, creeks, cays, cuts, mangroves, and fertile fishing grounds. If you are a first-time saltwater fisherman or an intermediate angler looking to improve, then Andros is a great place due to the sheer number of bonefish that inhabit the waters. Anglers new to fishing for bones can be taken to areas of the island where they can tune their skills on large numbers of small to medium-sized fish, usually from one to four pounds. These smaller fish are found in large numbers on White Bight and the waters that surround Mount Pleasant Fishing Lodge. The oceanside flats adjacent to the lodge will provide opportunities at larger bonefish cruising the turtle grass and coral. They can be difficult to spot due to the darker bottom, but they tend to be aggressive.

If you are a serious angler looking for big bones, then Andros Island should strongly be considered. Andros is arguably the best island in the Bahamas – if not the best in the world – for seeking BIG bonefish! For those seeking diversity, there are opportunities for tarpon, permit, jacks, barracuda, sharks, snapper, grouper, dolphin, and many other species. In the area that surrounds the lodge, you can find good numbers of barracuda during higher tides. This can make for great action with poppers! If you opt for guided days while staying at the lodge, you can pursue tarpon on Andros’ west side, or permit on nearby deep-water flats.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Anglers can arrange guided fishing on any or all of their days at Mount Pleasant. Guides utilize high-end 16-18 foot skiffs complete with poling platforms, 90-140HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks.

Accommodations:

THE LODGING
Mount Pleasant is a small, quaint lodge with comfortable duplex cottages. Each cottage has two rooms, with double and single beds and an open living room for socializing and lounging. The bedrooms are fully air-conditioned and the living rooms have ceiling fans and large windows to take advantage of the trade winds. Each cottage has a veranda overlooking the Oceanside flats, fresh water spigot for rinsing gear, small kitchenette and a private bathroom.

ESSENTIAL GEAR
Bahamas Bonefishing gear should include 9' Fly Rods in both 8 and/or 9 weight depending on conditions. For calm, delicate presentations, a 7 weight Fly Rod can be used. Saltwater conditions and hard running Bonefish demand the best of your equipment. Quality anodized reels with smooth drag systems, larger arbors, and capacity for at least 150 yards of 20 pound test backing. Floating Saltwater Fly line with fluorocarbon leaders ranging from 9' to 12' in 10, 12, 15 and 20 lb. test. You should also have tippet ranging from 8 lb. to 15 lb. test. Smaller shrimp patterns in tan and pink are Bahamas favorites. Crab patters can also be effective for both Bonefish and Permit. This is a remote tropical destination with limited/no opportunity to purchase gear so you need to come prepared to make the most out of your fishing trip. Other Information / Testimonials:

This unique location also offers access to three of Andros' most famous blue holes. These inland blue holes are subterranean cave passages, which are the most extensive in the world. These are favorite spots for snorkeling, scuba diving, breathe-taking jumps and social gatherings. These blue holes were first studied by Jacques Cousteau in a 1970's television documentary.

TESTIMONIALS

"We just returned after a week of chasing bonefish around Mt. Pleasant, White Bight, North Bight and Moxey Creek. Considering that it was unseasonably windy (according to the locals) we couldn't have had a better time. The digs at Mt. Pleasant were perfect if not lavish for a couple of fish bums like us. The food was great, our hosts the Farringtons were exceedingly kind. Even the bonefish were cooperative. We spent two days on the boats and three days on foot doing the wade fishing routine. We followed your tips and figured out a few of our own. I just wanted to drop you a quick note to extend my thanks for your help and services. This trip was spot-on and seamless."
- Eric C. of Stoughton, WI

"The people at the lodge were great! The room was clean and spacious. The setting was relaxing, and overall we had a great time. I would definitely go back."
- Joe D. of Flanders, NJ

“I had the pleasure of visiting Mt. Pleasant Lodge in Andros Island this past February, 2004. I struggle to find a single complaint about our trip, aside from my lack of experience in bone fishing prior to visiting Mt. Pleasant. I was extremely impressed by the accommodations, the surroundings, the service, and the fishing. We stayed four per bungalow and two per room, and each room had a two queen size beds and an air conditioning. The bungalows had a common area with television, a kitchen, and full size refrigerator. It was very comfortable living and ideal spot for post-fishing relaxation. Along with the three guest bungalows, there was a main lodge where we ate breakfast and dinner and drank at the bar. The surrounding flats – known as White Bight – are amazing. The pearly-white sand makes for excellent visibility as one stalks bones. Visibility was fantastic, even during the rain. During tide changes we would see hundreds of fish! With the expansive flats there was no overcrowding with four or five guys stalking fish at the same time. Furthermore, it’s hard to beat being able to cast for bones that are only five rod lengths from your front door! Our two hostesses, Stacy and Michelle, were fantastic! Awesome meals all the way around, and there was nothing better than returning from a long day of fishing to grouper fingers and fresh conch fritters. Great day packs for lunch were given to us every morning as well.”
- Cabell B. of New York, NY
