Stella Maris Resort and Bonefishing

Trip Summary:

Stella Maris Resort Club is an "elegant casual" destination located on the northern end of Long Island catering not only to the serious flats angler but to families, large groups, significant others, and non-anglers as well. Stella Maris Resort is located on North Long Island, Bahamas. Stella Maris offers year-round fly fishing for bonefish with February through May considered peak months. Additional opportunities for tarpon, permit, barracuda and jacks are available. Stella Maris can accommodate up to 8 flats fishermen, 8 reef/bluewater fishermen, and up to 50 non-anglers per week. Stella Maris targets flats species including Bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracuda and jacks as well as bluewater species including yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, and billfish.

Fishing & General Information:

LENGTH OF STAY
Trips of any length are available. With all of the amenities and non-angling activities, Stella Maris is the perfect place for family retreats, couple's getaways, group trips, and large corporate trips.

THE FISHING
The majority of the bonefishing takes place within a short distance from Stella Maris Marina in Adderley’s, Glenton’s, and Joe Sound’s Bay. The boat ride to these areas will range from 5 to 10 minutes with the majority of the fishing done from the boat. There are wading opportunities in the Stella Maris area, but the guides take advantage of the extensive flats system by covering more water by poling. If you enjoy wading, there are two large lagoon areas located further north called Cape Santa Maria and Columbus Harbour. Not only do these areas provide great wading situations, they are also drop-dead gorgeous, with beautiful white sand and sapphire water surrounded by rocky cliffs.

Schools of bonefish in the Stella Maris area can number anywhere from 40 to over 400, with the sizes of fish ranging anywhere from 2 to over 15 pounds. These schools can be found on the flats year-round due to the southerly location of Long Island and the warm consistent North Equatorial current. Permit can also be targeted during certain times of the year. Whether you are a first-time saltwater fisherman or an experienced angler, the guides at Stella Maris will provide you with a day on the water that you will not forget. All of the guides are Long Island natives who are endorsed by the Bahamian government as Bahamas Flyfishing Guides. By being committed to ensuring total client satisfaction, the guides are very patient, instructive, knowledgeable, and can adapt to the experience level of any angler.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
Guides utilize Hewes 16 foot skiffs complete with poling platforms, 90 HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks. Each boat also has life jackets and cell phones for emergencies.

ESSENTIAL GEAR
Bahamas Bonefishing gear should include 9' Fly Rods in both 8 and/or 9 weight depending on conditions. For calm, delicate presentations, a 7 weight Fly Rod can be used. Saltwater conditions and hard running Bonefish demand the best of your equipment. Quality anodized reels with smooth drag systems, larger arbors, and capacity for at least 150 yards of 20 pound test backing. Floating Saltwater Fly line with fluorocarbon leaders ranging from 9' to 12' in 10, 12, 15 and 20 lb. test. You should also have tippet ranging from 8 lb. to 15 lb. test. Smaller shrimp patterns in tan and pink are Bahamas favorites. Crab patters can also be effective for both Bonefish and Permit. This is a remote tropical destination with limited/no opportunity to purchase gear so you need to come prepared to make the most out of your fishing trip. Click here for the customized list of everything you need for the trip. Call or e-mail us and we'll be happy to assist you!

Non-Angling Activities:

Stella Maris has a complete list of non-angling activities including local island hopping by plane (pre-arranged trips only), scuba diving, snorkeling, shark diving, guided land tours, guided water/boat tours, biking, sea-kayaking, tennis, weight room, pools, catered parties, rental cars, sailing, eco-tours, cave parties, weekly live music, dances, and more parties!

Other Information / Testimonials:

These inland blue holes are subterranean caves passages, which are the most extensive in the world. These are favorite spots for snorkeling, scuba diving, breath-taking jumps, and social gatherings.

TESTIMONIALS
"Just a quick email to thank you from us to Stella Maris and Docky Smith. It was a good choice for us - we had a great trip! The bonefish were very cooperative, and I even had a shot at a nice big permit. I managed to make a perfect cast, only to have him glance down at the fly, look back up at me, smile in the teasing way only a permit can, and slowly swim away! We will gladly use Yellow Dog again, and will pass your website on to our fishing friends."
- Dave C. of Manchester, NH

"Your suggestion of Stella Maris for us was perfect, and Docky was great. Like all good guides, he quickly assessed our abilities, and unlike some guides, he went out of his way to adjust his boat handling to compensate for our weaknesses. To me, that is above and beyond the call of duty. His communication and instruction was great. Aside from that, the service and the staff at Stella Maris were first rate, and the food is something that we really looked forward to each night. In conclusion, if anyone asks me if I would book through Yellow Dog, the answer is - 'In a heartbeat!' Thanks again." - Dave C. of Woodstock, VT
