Blue Horizon Lodge

Trip Summary:

A very low-key, famous permit fishing lodge owned by Belizean guide legend Lincoln Westby. A great mix of rustic accommodations, economical pricing, and great access to some of the finest permit flats in the world. Yellow Dog is proud to be working with Blue Horizon.

Fishing & General Information:

LENGTH OF STAY
The average package is a one week (six fishing days and seven nights) package, although trips and itineraries of any length can be accommodated.

THE FISHING
Nestled in the heart of what the locals call "Permit Alley", Lincoln Westby’s Blue Horizon Lodge specializes in what else? Permit fishing. Some of the finest, most textbook permit habitat in the world is only minutes away from the lodge's front dock. Endless flats rise out of deep water thus ensuring a diversity of fishing scenarios throughout the day. For those seeking permit on the fly, then the waters of Southern Belize (From Dangriga to Placencia and all the way south to Punta Gorda) are arguably the finest in the entire world of saltwater fishing. While other species are found throughout the area, it should be understood that the fishing in this region is very focused on permit. This means that as a stand-alone trip, this trip may not be for everyone – unless of course, you’re someone who really wants to focus on catching permit on a fly! The accommodations are rustic, the food is basic, but the location and the caliber of your guides are as good as it gets.

The fishing program at Blue Horizon Lodge is unique, in that it has been designed around the seasoned angler who is serious about catching permit on the fly. Through years of trial and error, the guides of Blue Horizon have developed and mastered permit-fishing techniques that consistently produce. This fact coupled with the lodge’s geographical location make Blue Horizon one of the best destinations available to get honest shots at permit on the fly. Anglers can expect to get numerous realistic shots at permit on a daily basis. Something unique to Blue Horizon’s fishing program, and in contrast to traditional permit fishing, is the initial spotting of permit from the skiff, followed by stealthily slipping into the water, wading to within casting distance for optimal position, then casting to tailing fish. This type of fishing will blow your mind. There is no set fishing schedules at Blue Horizon Lodge; long fishing days are the norm. These guides fish by the tides, not by normal lodge and kitchen hours!

A few resident schools of bonefish in the area will keep things interesting, and one the best tarpon fishing spots in the entire area is a ten minute boat ride from the lodge. Barracuda, jacks and snapper are also abundant. No long boat rides are encountered at Blue Horizon, as the lodge sits virtually in the middle of hundreds of flats. Most fishing at Blue Horizon Lodge is done the way it should be: On foot, over grand flats that are solid and easily waded.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT OFFERED
The Blue Horizon guides all fish from 23 foot super-pangas, boats that are ideal for both polling the flats and running over open water from flat to flat. All of these boats have spacious casting decks and clean interiors. It is advised that anglers bring their own tackle and equipment.

Accommodations:

THE LODGING
Located in the middle of the best permit flats in the country, the lodge is situated on the Northeast Caye, one of the islands in the Pelican Caye Range, 18 miles Southeast of Dangriga, a small sleepy Belizean village. The lodge/camp at present features 3 private cabanas, each with its own shower and bathroom. A generator supplies electricity to all of the cabanas and the main bar and dining area. All of the cabana rooms feature two beds, private bath, a porch area, and two large room fans. Accommodations are comfortable, but by no means fancy! The food is a combination of traditional Belizean dishes and fresh seafood. Fresh vegetables and fruit are incorporated in meals, as Dangriga is in the heart of Belize’s agricultural region. Plenty of cold Belikin beer is always available as well as soft drinks and fruit juice. Blue Horizon Lodge is rustic, but the permit fishing is as good as it gets.

ESSENTIAL GEAR
Belize fly fishing gear should include 9' Fly Rods in both 8, 9 and 10 weight depending on conditions. For calm, delicate presentations to Bonefish, a 7 weight Fly Rod can be used. Saltwater conditions and hard running Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon demand the best of your equipement. Quality anodized reels with smooth drag systems, larger arbors, and capacity for at least 150 yards of 20 pound test backing. Floating Saltwater Fly line with fluorocarbon leaders ranging from 9' to 12' in 10, 12, 15 and 20 lb. test. You should also have tippet ranging from 8 lb. to 15 lb. test. Smaller shrimp patterns in tan and pink are Belize Bonefish favorites. Crab patters are very effective for Belize Permit. Typical Tarpon patterns are also a staple for Belize Tarpon. Clousers and snook patterns are also effective in the rivers, creeks and mangrove lagoons. This is a remote tropical destination with limited/no opportunity to purchase gear so you need to come prepared to make the most out of your fishing trip. Click here for the customized list of everything you need for the trip. Call or e-mail us and we'll be happy to assist you!

Non-Angling Activities:

For non-anglers visiting the area, Dangriga and Hopkins offer a host of non-angling mainland activities such as biking, canoeing, bird watching, kayaking, jungle tours, snorkeling on the outer islands, manatee watching, river trips, visits to local Indian villages, and tours of nearby Mayan ruins. Cave tubing in the area is also an option, as Tiger and Hokeb Ha Caves offer trips through huge caverns. Please contact Yellow Dog for more details.

Other Information / Testimonials:

Blue Horizon Lodge is a rustic out-island operation that has long been a favorite with serious permit anglers. While not the kind of place you’d want to take a non-fishing spouse, it is a great base of operations for fishing these waters from sun-up to sundown.
